Reflections from the past 30 years

Since 1996, the International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare has brought together clinicians, policymakers and improvers from around the world. This special supplement highlights voices and experience from three decades of shared learning that has helped shape safer, higher quality health systems.

A movement that grew beyond a conference

What began as a gathering of clinicians and improvement leaders has become a global community spanning more than 80 countries. Over 30 years, participants have shared methods, data and lived experience, helping to embed quality and safety as core components of healthcare leadership and delivery.

These reflections trace:

  • how improvement science moved from the margins into mainstream healthcare

  • how collaboration across systems accelerated practical change

  • how patient partnership and co design strengthened improvement efforts

  • how international exchange translated into local action.

Voices from across the community

The supplement brings together founders, longstanding contributors and emerging leaders, including Helen Bevan OBE, Don M. Berwick KBE, Richard Smith CBE, Fiona Moss CBE, Dominique Allwood MBE, Kamran Abbasi, and Maureen Bisognano.  Their accounts show how shared learning influences policy, reshapes services and supports safer, more person centred care.
